Worked example
What it makes
Three questions from a easier quiz on gradient (slope), with the answers and worked solutions the quiz shows after checking.
1. What is the gradient of the line through (5, 3) and (6, 7)?
Options: −4 · 5 · 1/4 · 4
Answer: 4
Gradient = change in y ÷ change in x = (7 − 3) ÷ (6 − 5) = 4 ÷ 1 = 4.
2. What is the gradient of the line y = −5x + 6?
Options: 5 · −1/5 · −5 · 6
Answer: −5
In y = mx + c the gradient m is the number multiplying x, so the gradient is −5.
3. What is the gradient of the line through (5, 7) and (9, 19)?
Options: 3 · 1/3 · 12 · −3
Answer: 3
Gradient = change in y ÷ change in x = (19 − 7) ÷ (9 − 5) = 12 ÷ 4 = 3.
Who it's for
Who uses it
Maths teachers
Practice on gradient without drawing graphs.
Learners
Remember change in y over change in x, not the other way round.
Tutors
Check rearranging before reading off m.
Good to know
What to consider
- The quiz is text-only: points are given as coordinates, not plotted on a grid.
- Fraction answers are in simplest form, such as −2/3.
- Levels are difficulty bands, not school grades or a curriculum.
Questions
About the Slope and Gradient Quiz Generator
Is slope the same as gradient?
Yes. Slope is the usual word in the US and gradient in the UK; both mean the change in y divided by the change in x.
How do I know the answers are right?
The questions are computed, not written by AI: each answer is worked out with exact arithmetic and checked again by a separate solver in our tests. Every question shows its worked solution after the learner checks their answers.
Can my students use it without an account?
Yes. Publish the Room and share the link: anyone with it can take the quiz, check their answers and read the worked solutions. You need a free account to keep and publish the Room.
