Worked example
What it makes
Three questions from a easier quiz on pythagoras' theorem, with the answers and worked solutions the quiz shows after checking.
1. A right-angled triangle has shorter sides of 8 m and 15 m. How long is the hypotenuse?
Options: 289 m · 23 m · 18 m · 17 m
Answer: 17 m
c² = a² + b² = 8² + 15² = 64 + 225 = 289, so c = √289 = 17 m.
2. A right-angled triangle has shorter sides of 4 m and 3 m. How long is the hypotenuse?
Options: 25 m · 6 m · 5 m · 7 m
Answer: 5 m
c² = a² + b² = 4² + 3² = 16 + 9 = 25, so c = √25 = 5 m.
3. A right-angled triangle has shorter sides of 30 m and 16 m. How long is the hypotenuse?
Options: 34 m · 46 m · 33 m · 1,156 m
Answer: 34 m
c² = a² + b² = 30² + 16² = 900 + 256 = 1,156, so c = √1,156 = 34 m.
Who it's for
Who uses it
Maths teachers
Practice with right-angled triangles described in words.
Learners
Know when to add the squares and when to subtract.
Tutors
Build from whole-number triples to decimal answers.
Good to know
What to consider
- Levels 1 and 2 use Pythagorean triples, so answers are whole numbers.
- Level 3 adds word problems, coordinates and answers to 1 decimal place.
- Triangles are described in words, without diagrams.
Questions
About the Pythagorean Theorem Quiz Generator
Which triples are used?
3-4-5 and its multiples, 5-12-13, 8-15-17, 7-24-25, 20-21-29 and 9-40-41.
How do I know the answers are right?
The questions are computed, not written by AI: each answer is worked out with exact arithmetic and checked again by a separate solver in our tests. Every question shows its worked solution after the learner checks their answers.
Can my students use it without an account?
Yes. Publish the Room and share the link: anyone with it can take the quiz, check their answers and read the worked solutions. You need a free account to keep and publish the Room.
