Worked example

What it makes

Three questions from a easier quiz on direct proportion word problems, with the answers and worked solutions the quiz shows after checking.

  1. 1. A recipe for 5 people uses 375 g of flour. How much flour is needed for 15 people?

    Options: 125 g · 385 g · 5,625 g · 1,125 g

    Answer: 1,125 g

    For 1 person: 375 g ÷ 5 = 75 g. For 15 people: 75 × 15 = 1,125 g.

  2. 2. 3 apples cost $2.10. How much do 10 apples cost?

    Options: $0.70 · $9.10 · $7.00 · $21.00

    Answer: $7.00

    Find the cost of one: $2.10 ÷ 3 = $0.70. Then 10 × $0.70 = $7.00.

  3. 3. A recipe for 4 people uses 500 g of rice. How much rice is needed for 12 people?

    Options: 1,500 g · 508 g · 6,000 g · 166.7 g

    Answer: 1,500 g

    For 1 person: 500 g ÷ 4 = 125 g. For 12 people: 125 × 12 = 1,500 g.

Who it's for

Who uses it

  • Teachers

Practice on proportion in everyday contexts.

  • Learners

Use 'find one, then scale' every time.

  • Tutors

    Catch the adding-instead-of-scaling mistake.

Good to know

What to consider

  • Direct proportion only; inverse proportion (more workers, less time) is not included.
  • Map questions use scales like 1:25,000, with answers in km or cm.
  • Levels are difficulty bands, not school grades or a curriculum.
