Worked example
What it makes
Three questions from a easier quiz on quadratic equations, with the answers and worked solutions the quiz shows after checking.
1. Solve (x − 4)(x + 9) = 0.
Options: x = −10 or x = 4 · x = 4 or x = 9 · x = −9 or x = 4 · x = −4 or x = 9
Answer: x = −9 or x = 4
If two brackets multiply to 0, one of them is 0: x − 4 = 0 gives x = 4, and x + 9 = 0 gives x = −9.
2. Solve x² = 16.
Options: x = 4 · x = −16 or x = 16 · x = −4 or x = 4 · x = 8
Answer: x = −4 or x = 4
Both 4 × 4 and (−4) × (−4) equal 16, so x = 4 or x = −4.
3. Solve (x + 6)(x − 9) = 0.
Options: x = −6 or x = 9 · x = −6 or x = 8 · x = −9 or x = −6 · x = −9 or x = 6
Answer: x = −6 or x = 9
If two brackets multiply to 0, one of them is 0: x + 6 = 0 gives x = −6, and x − 9 = 0 gives x = 9.
Who it's for
Who uses it
Maths teachers
Practice on solving quadratics by factorising.
Learners
Remember both roots, including the negative one.
Tutors
Practise rearranging to = 0 before factorising.
Good to know
What to consider
- Every equation has two different whole-number roots, so it can be solved by factorising.
- Level 3 includes taking out a common factor and equations that need rearranging first.
- Levels are difficulty bands, not school grades or a curriculum.
Questions
About the Quadratic Equations Quiz Generator
Does it use the quadratic formula?
The solutions factorise, because every equation here factorises. The formula gives the same roots if learners prefer it.
How do I know the answers are right?
The questions are computed, not written by AI: each answer is worked out with exact arithmetic and checked again by a separate solver in our tests. Every question shows its worked solution after the learner checks their answers.
Can my students use it without an account?
Yes. Publish the Room and share the link: anyone with it can take the quiz, check their answers and read the worked solutions. You need a free account to keep and publish the Room.
