Worked example
What it makes
Three questions from a easier quiz on expanding brackets, with the answers and worked solutions the quiz shows after checking.
1. Expand 7(x + 3).
Options: 7x − 21 · 7x + 21 · 7x + 3 · 7x + 10
Answer: 7x + 21
Multiply each term inside the bracket by 7: 7 × x = 7x and 7 × 3 = 21. So 7x + 21.
2. Expand 2(2x − 5).
Options: 4x + 10 · 4x − 5 · 4x − 3 · 4x − 10
Answer: 4x − 10
Multiply each term inside the bracket by 2: 2 × 2x = 4x and 2 × (−5) = −10. So 4x − 10.
3. Expand 4(x − 6).
Options: 4x − 24 · 4x − 6 · 4x + 24 · 4x − 2
Answer: 4x − 24
Multiply each term inside the bracket by 4: 4 × x = 4x and 4 × (−6) = −24. So 4x − 24.
Who it's for
Who uses it
Maths teachers
Practice from 3(x + 4) up to (2x − 1)(x + 5).
Learners
Fix the (x + 3)² = x² + 9 mistake.
Tutors
Check signs when the multiplier is negative.
Good to know
What to consider
- Level 1 is single brackets, level 2 adds negative multipliers and expand-and-simplify, level 3 double brackets.
- The solution writes out every product before collecting like terms: the same steps as the grid or FOIL methods.
- Levels are difficulty bands, not school grades or a curriculum.
Questions
About the Expanding Brackets Quiz Generator
Does it use the grid method or FOIL?
Both give the same four products. The solution lists them, then collects the x terms.
How do I know the answers are right?
The questions are computed, not written by AI: each answer is worked out with exact arithmetic and checked again by a separate solver in our tests. Every question shows its worked solution after the learner checks their answers.
Can my students use it without an account?
Yes. Publish the Room and share the link: anyone with it can take the quiz, check their answers and read the worked solutions. You need a free account to keep and publish the Room.
