Worked example
What it makes
13 questions across 5 areas. Each answer scores 0 to 3; an area's score is its points as a share of the most it could get.
Inventory
- There's one list of all devices (laptops, phones, servers, network kit) with serial numbers.
- The list is updated when devices are bought, moved or retired.
- Paid software and cloud subscriptions are listed too.
Ownership
- Each device has a named user or owner and a location.
- Leavers return their devices and the list is updated straight away.
Software and licences
- For each paid product, you know how many licences you own and how many are in use.
- Unused licences and subscriptions are reviewed and cancelled regularly.
- Renewal dates are tracked, with someone responsible for each.
Lifecycle and disposal
- Purchase date, warranty and expected replacement date are recorded.
- Old devices are wiped securely before reuse, sale or recycling, with a record kept.
Security
- Every listed device is checked for updates, disk encryption and screen lock.
- Lost or stolen devices can be locked or wiped remotely.
- Unknown devices on the network or unknown software are spotted and checked.

Good to know
What to consider
- It scores how you manage assets; it doesn't scan your network or count devices.
- Unused software subscriptions are often the quickest saving: check licences first.
Questions
About the IT Asset Audit Checklist
Does it produce an asset register?
No. It checks your asset management practice and gives next steps. Keep the register itself in a spreadsheet or an asset management tool.
Is this an audit or a certification?
No. It scores your own answers against a written rubric to show where you stand and what to do next. Use it to start a conversation, not as an audit, certification or professional advice.
