Worked example
What it makes
Three questions from a easier quiz on scientific notation, with the answers and worked solutions the quiz shows after checking.
1. Write 6,940,000 in scientific notation.
Options: 6.94 × 10⁷ · 694 × 10⁶ · 6.94 × 10⁵ · 6.94 × 10⁶
Answer: 6.94 × 10⁶
Put the decimal point after the first non-zero digit: 6.94. The point moves 6 places to the left, so the power is 6: 6.94 × 10⁶.
2. Write 30,000 in scientific notation.
Options: 3 × 10⁴ · 3 × 10² · 3 × 10³ · 3 × 10⁵
Answer: 3 × 10⁴
Put the decimal point after the first non-zero digit: 3. The point moves 4 places to the left, so the power is 4: 3 × 10⁴.
3. Write 8.81 × 10⁷ as an ordinary number.
Options: 8,810,000,000 · 8,810,000 · 88,100,000 · 881,000,000
Answer: 88,100,000
Multiplying by 10⁷ moves the decimal point 7 places to the right: 8.81 becomes 88,100,000.

Tutors
Practise adjusting the power when a product passes 10.
Good to know
What to consider
- Answers use a number from 1 up to (not including) 10, such as 4.5 × 10⁴.
- Level 2 adds small numbers with negative powers; level 3 multiplies and divides.
- Adding and subtracting in standard form is not included yet.
Questions
About the Scientific Notation Quiz Generator
Is scientific notation the same as standard form?
Yes. In the UK it is usually called standard form; the questions use the same layout, such as 4.5 × 10⁴.
How do I know the answers are right?
The questions are computed, not written by AI: each answer is worked out with exact arithmetic and checked again by a separate solver in our tests. Every question shows its worked solution after the learner checks their answers.
Can my students use it without an account?
Yes. Publish the Room and share the link: anyone with it can take the quiz, check their answers and read the worked solutions. You need a free account to keep and publish the Room.
