Worked example
What it makes
Three questions from a easier quiz on rounding, with the answers and worked solutions the quiz shows after checking.
1. Round 1,229 to the nearest hundred.
Options: 1,300 · 1,200 · 12 · 1,230
Answer: 1,200
To round to the nearest hundred, look at the next digit to the right: 2. It is less than 5, so round down: 1,229 → 1,200.
2. Round 162 to the nearest ten.
Options: 170 · 16 · 160 · 162
Answer: 160
To round to the nearest ten, look at the next digit to the right: 2. It is less than 5, so round down: 162 → 160.
3. Round 779 to the nearest ten.
Options: 779 · 780 · 78 · 770
Answer: 780
To round to the nearest ten, look at the next digit to the right: 9. It is 5 or more, so round up: 779 → 780.

What to consider
- Halves round up, the usual school rule, so 2.5 rounds to 3.
- Level 3 includes numbers where rounding up carries into the next place, such as 49,750 to 50,000.
- Levels are difficulty bands, not school grades or a curriculum.
