Juniper Street Seed-Starting Lesson
The idea and today’s plan
Subject: seed starting. Group: 22 Grade 5 students with mixed reading levels and no prior gardening experience. Location: school library, with two sinks and no outdoor planting beds.
Starter · 5 min: Teacher asks, “What might a seed need to begin growing?” Learners share an idea with a partner, then a few pairs share aloud.
Explore · 10 min: Teacher introduces the lesson’s seed-germination conditions. Learners name and record at least three. Source detail to prepare before teaching: [Add the creator-approved three or more conditions seeds need to germinate.]
Model · 8 min: Teacher demonstrates planting one lettuce or radish seed in a tray cell. Show the appropriate depth: [Add the creator-approved planting depth for the selected seed.] Learners watch for the steps they will practise.
Pair planting · 15 min: Teacher and assistant distribute trays, potting mix, seeds, spray bottles, labels and rulers. In pairs, learners fill one tray cell, plant a lettuce or radish seed at the demonstrated depth, label it and water gently. Each pair may take one planted tray cell back to class.
Plenary · 7 min: Learners explain to a partner how they will care for their seed, then answer the check in the Check tab. Teacher listens for the germination needs, appropriate planting depth and care plan.
Materials: seed-starting trays, potting mix, spray bottles, labels, rulers, lettuce seeds and radish seeds. Mara can bring 30 seeds of each kind. Dev Patel can help distribute materials and repeat instructions. After class, place seedlings near a bright window and water gently.
Pairs practise planting seeds in a school library.
